Coronavirus COVID-19 update

Like everyone, Clapham Pioneers is happy that life is slowly regaining some semblance of normality, as the risk posed by Coronavirus starts to reduce. It’s great that we can meet up with more friends, family and loved ones, as well as train and socialise together in small groups, whilst observing social distancing and other government guidelines. We have had fun with our virtual quizzes, challenges, games and continued with the club championship over the past 3 months. And it’s been good to see via social media how club members have been supporting each other during what has been a strange and sometimes difficult time for many of us.

Although the government is now allowing small groups of up to 6 people from different households to socialise and exercise together, the Pioneers committee does not feel that this lends itself to reopening our usual training and coaching yet. The practical challenges of doing this safely, compliantly and sensitively, taking into account the needs of our local communities, are still too great.

Taking a cautious approach for now is in line with England Athletics guidance, therefore for the foreseeable future we will continue with the suspension of all face-to-face club coaching and training, instead continuing to focus on our virtual activities. Our schedule of events over the summer includes:

  • 30th June at 7.30pm: online HIIT session with Paul
  • 11th July: EA Virtual 5k Champs
  • 14th July at 7.30pm: Yoga (we hope…)
  • 25th / 26th July: Pioneers Scavenger Hunt Challenge
  • 28th July: Pioneers Tuesday catch up (event to be announced shortly)
  • 8th – 16th August: 1 mile relay Championship event

Once the government updates the guideline again, we will assess the situation and work out a safe plan to resume club activities when possible. This will include the identification of a ‘Covid-19 Coordinator’ to ensure all necessary risk assessments are in place for starting up valid and insured club sessions again.

Until then continue to keep safe, ensure your running related activities are appropriate and within guidelines, and we will all look forward to returning better, faster, stronger in the not too distant future.
